Join the Davis Education Foundation and Davis Reads for a special evening with PBS filmmaker Ken Burns as he previews and shares the stories behind his latest documentary.
Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida
to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — The National Parks: America's Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background
– rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to
saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. It is a story full of struggle and conflict,
high ideals and crass opportunism, stirring adventure and enduring inspiration - set against the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable.
Burns will share previously unscreened portions of this documentary and tell the stories from beyond the screen at this special event. He will discuss his unique way of turning
history into an art form, making people and events, long since dead, come very much alive. The late historian, Stephen Ambrose said of Ken Burn’s, “More Americans get
their history from Ken Burns than any other source. History makes them famous. Ken Burns makes them real.”
What is Davis Reads
Davis Reads, a program of the Davis Education Foundation brings communities within Davis County closer together for stimulating discussions, to challenge stereotypes, and
generate ideas. The overarching goal of Davis Reads is to build a better community through reading and civic discourse. The literacy initiative encourages individuals and
families to read, increase the sense of community by creating a common topic of conversation, and create opportunities to engage people in reading and discussion over a variety of
topics.
